On August 30, 1892, the 300′ long steamer Western Reserve broke up and sank 60 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. She was one of the first all steel steamships on the lakes and was dubbed the “Inland Greyhound” for her outright speed and ability to break cargo ship records.
